'Quake Live' was one of the most beautiful and intriguing free-to-play first-person shooters on Steam, but a new update has made plenty of fans angry as now the game is not free at all. The new Steam update, which was published on the Steam page for 'Quake Live' yesterday, actually brought Steamworks integration, and got rid of the old Quake Live Subscription Service. For gamers, this means that the voice chat, server browser, statistics, friends list, lobbies, and chat are now all ran through Steam. While some of this news is good, there is quite a bit of bad going on with this new Steam update, and gamers are furious.
While the Steam integration certainly is a good thing, but gamers actually are now really angry as the game ended the free-to-play service, and now is charging $10 for the game. While gamers who already have this game are not going to be charged, since it is already in the Steam library, this is a pretty shady thing to do as right now it is unclear whether Bethesda, the 'Quake Live' publisher ever mentioned charging for the game after the update. While for new players this is not good news, as it was one of the best free-to-play first-person shooter games on Steam, but there is some bad news for even the veteran players of the game. A lot of players are reporting that the old statistics as well as their friends list is lost, and the Quake Live forums are blowing up with complains about the stats being wiped away.
'Quake Live' launched back in 2010, so for those players who have been playing the game for about 5 years, that is a lot of stats to just be wiped off the system without warning or possible feedback about how to make the transition smoother or possible ways to backup the data before the 'Quake Live' update. So there are really two things with the 'Quake Live' update that has people upset, from the game now charging $10 to download and for those already playing, the statistics being completely wiped from their accounts.
I could install DOSBox, download the Quake installer, and install and play with no difficulty—but getting the same thing done in DOSBox Pure was an exercise in frustration. Quake Live is a first-person shooter video game by id Software. It is an updated version of Quake III Arena that was originally designed as a free-to-play game launched via a web browser plug-in. On September 17, 2014, the game was re-launched as a standalone title on Steam. Quake Live was previously a free-to-play game, with subscription options offering additional arenas, game types and game server options. Reminder: Quake Live, with some changes, arrives on Steam today—in the afternoon, to be specific. Of course, it'll be free-to-play, so those jonesing for some old-school arena-shooting action will. Methinks the truth should live from age to age, As 'twere retail'd to all posterity, Even to the general all-ending day. GLOUCESTER Aside So wise so young, they say, do never live long. PRINCE EDWARD What say you, uncle? GLOUCESTER I say, without characters, fame lives long. Thus, like the formal vice, Iniquity, I moralize two meanings.
It also seems that the subscription service being retired is happening because of the new price for the game, as now all players will get the same in-game features and benefits since you have to pay for it. All of the players can now have full access to customize the game as the subscription players did, as well as the ability to vote on the maps, and also have the ability to run Listen Servers. All players also will now see more customization in the game as players each can configure the matches to how they want them, which is a nice addition. You also can opt into the newer gameplay mechanics, like Global Ammo, Item Timers, and Starting Weapons, which gives you more control on how you play 'Quake Live' like never before. The developers said that it seems these were effective features in some modes of the game, but not in allof the models, so now all of the modes have loadouts disabled, which is a default setting.
Quake Live Free To Play Multiplayer
Even though 'Quake Live' has been around since 2010, the game only hit Steam last year, and back then there was controversy surrounding the game as well. The controversy from back then was that it was a game that some felt was just trying to appeal to the more casual first-person shooter gamers out there. When it comes down to it though, the fanbase of 'Quake Live' is some of the most dedicated gamers on Steam and off Steam, and these new changes, while somewhat good, certainly have a lot of people reevaluating their loyalty to the game. The Steam Integration is not even that nice of a feature for most of these gamers, as most of them would rather have all of their statistics back than to get these new features and Steam integration.

Not to leave out that even some friends lists and user settings have also been wiped clean, and if you forgot to move to the Steam version of the game, well you will now have to pay regardless of how long you have been playing the game. It does not appear that there is any way to refund the existing PRO token purchases, although this could change if Bethesda sees enough backlash over the wiping of statistics and other information, as well as the whole now having to pay for the game part of the equation. So far, the developers have not responded to the player complaints, although it seems that this is not going over well at all, and at some point they will need to say something if it keeps going.
